Shakira in court: she’s risking big!

Successful singer Shakira appeared before the Spanish courts on November 20, 2023. She is implicated in a tax fraud case that has been dragging on for several years now.

The 46-year-old singer was suspected of tax fraud to the tune of 14.5 million euros. But while she said she would prefer to go through with the trial and plead guilty, the Waka Waka singer finally agreed to seal a deal with the Spanish justice system.

As reported by BFMTV on Monday November 20, Shakira has admitted her guilt and will have to pay a fine of 7.3 million euros. This astronomical sum comes on top of the 17.2 million she had already paid to the tax authorities to regularize her situation. In signing this agreement, Gerard Piqué’s ex-companion also received a suspended three-year prison sentence, which was eventually commuted to a fine.

Despite this, Shakira once again proclaimed her « innocence » in a statement sent by her lawyers. In the message, the Colombian artist reveals that she entered into such an agreement to protect her career and her children. « I had two options: continue to fight to the end, mortgaging my peace of mind and that of my children, stop making songs, albums and tours » or « close and leave behind this chapter of my life », she said.

She added: « I have to choose my battles, and the most important one for me right now is to do everything I can to ensure that my children live a full life, and focus on what’s really important: seeing them grow up and have fun. »
